The display, discovered around Halloween, features five eerily realistic figures suspended from nooses in a private yard, a stark and disturbing image that has sent ripples of concern through the region.
The unsettling arrangement is accompanied by a sign declaring, “Politics All Tricks No Treats,” a grim message that immediately raised alarms. Adding to the targeted nature of the display, four of the figures bear the word “ward” alongside numbers corresponding to specific electoral divisions within Tache.
Ivan Normandeau, president of the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities and reeve of La Broquerie, described the scene as profoundly intimidating and graphic. He believes one figure is specifically intended to represent Tache’s mayor, adorned with a red crown and a sign stating, “Tache Municipal Matters For Sale.”
The display has shaken local officials, with Normandeau recounting a history of receiving threatening communications, but nothing approaching the brazenness of this public spectacle. He expressed disbelief that someone could create such a display without considering the impact of their actions.
Normandeau points to a disturbing trend of escalating intimidation tactics directed at government officials, attributing much of it to the emboldening effect of social media. He notes a significant increase in aggressive behavior over the past five to six years, a shift he believes demands attention and a proactive response.
Tache’s mayor, Armand Poirier, confirmed that the council convened over the weekend to address the situation and plans to release further details on Monday. The RCMP has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the ongoing investigation, but the gravity of the situation is undeniable.
