The investigation centers on the Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ) and Open Society Foundations (OSF), with lawmakers questioning their involvement with groups like Refuse Fascism. Concerns stem from reports suggesting AFGJ acts as a financial sponsor for Antifa-affiliated organizations, funneling funds to groups present at protests and demonstrations.
The letters request a comprehensive review of communications, financial records, and internal policies dating back to 2017. Lawmakers are seeking to understand the extent of these organizations’ knowledge and potential complicity in activities deemed extremist and violent.
Adding another layer of complexity, scrutiny is focused on AFGJ’s sponsorship of Samidoun, an organization the Treasury Department has labeled a “sham charity” with ties to a U.S.-designated terrorist group. Documents reveal a significant financial contribution from the Foundation to Promote Open Society – a grantmaking arm of George Soros’s Open Society Foundations – to AFGJ in 2020. Further fueling the controversy, reports indicate OSF has donated over $80 million since 2016 to organizations accused of supporting extremism and violence. Specifically, the Sunrise Movement, a group with alleged connections to Antifa, received at least $2 million from OSF.
The Sunrise Movement’s endorsement of the “Stop Cop City” movement in Atlanta, where violent clashes with law enforcement involved Molotov cocktails and attacks on officers, has intensified concerns. Prosecutors have already filed domestic terrorism charges related to the incidents.
