A five-year mystery surrounding pipe bombs discovered near the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters has abruptly ended with the arrest of Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year-old Florida man. Federal agents took him into custody Thursday, charging him with transporting an explosive device and attempted malicious destruction.
The case, once seemingly stalled, was resurrected by a renewed investigation spearheaded by recently appointed FBI leadership. Investigators meticulously re-examined existing evidence, a process officials say was deliberately neglected for years. Seven data transactions correlate directly with the surveillance footage showing the placement of the devices at both the DNC and RNC headquarters, aligning perfectly with the timing of the events.
Following the arrest, Cole’s family expressed shock and disbelief. His grandmother described him as “almost autistic-like” and naive, insisting he would “not hurt a fly.” She vehemently denied the allegations, claiming he had no connection to Washington D.C.
