A day that began like any other shattered in Cambridge Thursday afternoon, as a devastating collision claimed the life of a three-year-old child. The incident unfolded at a plaza on Cedar Street, a scene now marked by unimaginable grief and unanswered questions.
Police responded to the scene at 12:50 p.m., arriving to find a heartbreaking situation: a vehicle had struck two pedestrians within a marked crosswalk. Both individuals were immediately rushed to the hospital, battling critical, life-threatening injuries.
Despite the desperate efforts of medical personnel, the youngest victim, a three-year-old girl, tragically succumbed to her injuries. A 31-year-old woman also injured in the collision is currently receiving treatment for serious, though non-life-threatening, wounds.
The driver involved, a 75-year-old man from Cambridge, thankfully escaped physical harm. The investigation is now focused on understanding the sequence of events that led to this terrible loss.
Meanwhile, authorities are also investigating a brazen carjacking that unfolded on a busy highway in Etobicoke Wednesday evening. The incident began with a collision between two vehicles on the northbound lanes of Hwy. 427 near Hwy. 401.
Two individuals emerged from a white Audi and confronted the driver of a grey BMW, escalating into a physical altercation. One suspect then fled in the stolen BMW, while the other escaped in the Audi.
The stolen BMW continued its reckless path, becoming involved in another minor collision just hours later on Hwy. 403 in Mississauga. Instead of stopping, the vehicle sped away, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and mounting concern.
In a separate case, a Guelph woman now faces theft charges after police recovered a significant cache of stolen merchandise – a collection of coveted Jellycat toys. The investigation began with a series of thefts reported from a Kitchener business between October and December.
A search warrant executed at a Guelph home revealed a staggering 140 stolen toys, valued at approximately $7,500. The majority of the recovered items were the highly sought-after Jellycat plushies, believed to have been taken from businesses across southwestern Ontario.
The 52-year-old woman has been charged with theft, possession of stolen property, and trafficking in stolen goods. These incidents serve as stark reminders of the fragility of life and the importance of vigilance within our communities.
Police are urging anyone with information regarding any of these incidents – the Cambridge collision, the Etobicoke carjacking, or the Guelph theft – to come forward. Even the smallest detail could prove crucial to the ongoing investigations.
