The crash involved four vehicles: an Isuzu bus (Nile Star Coaches, registration number UBF 614X), a Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07), a Tata Lorry (UBK 647C), and another Isuzu bus (Planet Company, UAM 045V).
According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the Nile Star bus, which was travelling from Kampala towards Gulu, attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry. At the same time, the Planet Company bus, coming from the opposite direction, was overtaking the Toyota Surf. The two buses collided head-on during the maneuver.
One of the drivers swerved in an attempt to avoid the crash, but the buses still collided, triggering a chain reaction that caused other vehicles to lose control and overturn multiple times.
Police said all 63 victims were occupants of the involved vehicles, while several others sustained injuries.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, with the injured taken to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby health facilities. The bodies of the deceased were moved to Kiryandongo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination and identification.
