A chillingly calculated scheme unfolded last fall, targeting vulnerable citizens with a sophisticated deception. A young man, now wanted by authorities, allegedly posed as a bank representative, initiating a series of fraudulent events that left victims stripped of their financial security.
The first incident occurred on October 1st, 2025. A victim received a convincing phone call claiming their credit card had been compromised. The caller expertly arranged for a courier to collect the card directly from the victim’s home, near Cosburn and Pape Avenues, masking a sinister intent.
Once in possession of the card, the suspect allegedly wasted no time, traveling to a jewelry store in Mississauga. There, he brazenly purchased $11,000 worth of jewelry, exploiting the stolen credit information with cold precision.
Just two days later, the same predatory tactic was employed against a second victim. Again, a phone call, a fabricated security breach, and a dispatched courier. This time, the fraudulent purchases at a Mississauga jewelry store totaled a staggering $14,000.
Investigators have identified Madjid Benmaou, a 20-year-old man from Montreal, as the prime suspect. He now faces a multitude of charges, including fraud, possession of stolen property, and unauthorized use of credit card data – a testament to the scale of the alleged operation.
Police have released images of Benmaou, hoping the public can assist in his apprehension. He is described as having a large build, with dark hair and eyes, and is known to frequent both Quebec and Mississauga. Authorities have also linked him to a black Dodge pickup truck with Quebec license plate AKJ52Z.
Law enforcement officials are deeply concerned that other individuals may have fallen victim to this elaborate ruse. The suspect’s methods were meticulously crafted to instill trust and exploit the inherent security concerns of cardholders.
Anyone with information regarding Madjid Benmaou’s whereabouts is urged to contact the police immediately at 416-808-5500. Tips can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, offering a vital lifeline in bringing this suspect to justice.
