A simmering conflict within the House of Representatives is rapidly escalating, as conservative lawmakers are determined to pursue impeachment proceedings against federal judges. This renewed push, fueled by accusations of judicial overreach and obstruction of a former president’s policies, has gained significant momentum following a key signal from Speaker Mike Johnson.
The core of the dispute centers on judges perceived to be actively hindering the implementation of past initiatives. Representative Andy Ogles revealed Speaker Johnson’s continued support for impeachment, stating, “We’re going to push to move forward on at least one.” This marks a stark shift from previous leadership, which largely dismissed impeachment as an impractical response to rulings they disagreed with.
U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has become a focal point of the conservative ire. His decisions regarding immigration policies – specifically, challenges to programs involving the relocation of migrants – have drawn sharp criticism. More recently, his authorization of access to Republican lawmakers’ phone records during a sensitive investigation has further inflamed tensions.
Representative Brandon Gill is spearheading the effort to impeach Boasberg, and expressed optimism with Johnson’s public endorsement. He believes Boasberg has consistently acted with a partisan agenda, and that the Speaker’s leadership is vital to securing a vote. The resolution is already attracting additional co-sponsors within the House.
Other Republicans are echoing the call for accountability. Representative Andrew Clyde bluntly stated that Boasberg is a “forthright judicial activist,” while Representative Marlin Stutzman emphasized the weight of Johnson’s support, given his background as a constitutional lawyer. The sentiment is growing that decisive action is needed to address what they see as a fundamental imbalance of power.
However, the path to impeachment is not without obstacles. Some Republicans, like Representative Andy Harris, question whether the effort can even survive the rigorous committee process. Others, such as Representative Blake Moore, still favor legislative solutions – specifically, a bill aimed at limiting the scope of nationwide injunctions issued by district judges.
Despite these reservations, a palpable shift in appetite is emerging. Representative Lance Gooden articulated a growing frustration, stating that the nation expects Congress to hold judges accountable, especially as other avenues for resolution appear to be failing.
