A pre-dawn emergency unfolded in east London as flames erupted within a data centre on Nutmeg Lane in Blackwall. Just before 5am, dozens of firefighters raced against time to contain a blaze that threatened a critical infrastructure hub.
The heart of the fire lay in the building’s basement – a room packed with approximately 200 lead-acid batteries. Thick smoke billowed as crews arrived, immediately focusing on preventing the fire from spreading beyond the contained space.
Fortunately, despite the intensity of the initial response, the fire was brought under control by 6:43am. Firefighters skillfully prevented any further damage to the building itself, a testament to their rapid and effective intervention.
Remarkably, no injuries were reported. The quick actions of the responding crews ensured the safety of anyone who might have been present, averting a potentially far more serious outcome.
An investigation is currently underway, but early indications point to an accidental cause. Authorities believe a failure within one of the batteries sparked the initial flames, triggering the large-scale response.
Crews from six different fire stations – Poplar, Millwall, Plaistow, Stratford, East Ham, and Greenwich – collaborated to extinguish the blaze. The coordinated effort demonstrates the London Fire Brigade’s preparedness for complex incidents.
