WAR IS COMING: Cambodia Declares All-Out Border Battle!

The air crackled with renewed violence along the Thailand-Cambodia border, forcing tens of thousands to abandon their homes as a fragile peace shattered into open conflict. What began as a localized skirmish quickly escalated, threatening to engulf both nations in a wider war.

Just months after a ceasefire – painstakingly brokered and pressured by international forces – had offered a glimmer of hope, the border erupted once more. The initial clash left Thai soldiers wounded, but the fallout proved far more devastating, triggering a cycle of accusation and retaliation.

Hun Sen, the influential figure who recently transitioned from Prime Minister, delivered a stark warning: Cambodia desired peace, but would resolutely defend its territory. His words echoed a sentiment shared by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who affirmed unwavering support for military operations to safeguard national sovereignty.

A rocket (L) and smoke trails from a multiple rocket launcher are seen in the sky during clashes along the Cambodia-Thailand border in Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province on December 10, 2025. Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia spread to more parts of their contested border on December 9, forcing a mass exodus of civilians as the renewed hostilities derailed a US-brokered truce.

The battlefield reports painted a grim picture. Thailand’s military reported facing artillery, rocket, and drone attacks from Cambodian forces, while Cambodia countered with claims of initial aggression from its neighbor. Each side insisted it was responding to provocation, fueling a dangerous spiral of escalation.

The human cost was already mounting. Cambodia reported seven civilian deaths and twenty wounded, while Thailand confirmed the loss of three soldiers. Airstrikes launched by Thailand targeted military installations, a move officials defended as purely defensive, promising continued action until the attacks ceased.

In Surin, Thailand, a university transformed into a desperate haven for over 3,600 evacuees. They huddled on thin mats, constructing makeshift shelters amidst the growing fear. The simple act of receiving a cooked meal became a moment of fragile normalcy in a landscape consumed by crisis.

“We were preparing to evacuate, but when the shots rang out, we ran,” recounted Pan-ngam Kanchangthong, a cassava farmer, her voice trembling with fear. “Who wouldn’t be scared of shelling?” Her words captured the terror gripping communities on both sides of the border.

Across the frontier, in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province, Vach Neang, a father of seven, described a similar scene of panic. The sound of explosions sent him scrambling to find his family, grabbing only a few belongings before fleeing the impending danger.

The roots of this conflict run deep, woven into centuries of rivalry and territorial disputes. The 800-kilometer border has long been a source of tension, punctuated by periodic outbreaks of violence. Thailand’s greater economic and military strength adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

Adding fuel to the fire, accusations flew regarding the damage to an 11th-century temple, Ta Krabey, a site claimed by both nations as part of their cultural heritage. Cambodia accused Thai forces of a “reprehensible act,” while Thailand alleged Cambodian rocket attacks originating near the temple.

The previous ceasefire, secured through Malaysian mediation and pressure from international powers, appeared to be crumbling. Key provisions – the removal of heavy weapons and landmines – remained unimplemented, overshadowed by a bitter propaganda war and continued border incidents.

Lingering disputes over prisoners and landmines further complicated matters. Cambodia demanded the release of 18 prisoners held by Thailand, while Thailand accused Cambodia of laying new landmines, causing grievous injuries to its soldiers. Cambodia maintained the mines were remnants of past conflicts.

As the crisis deepened, international attention turned to potential intervention. Calls for both sides to honor their previous commitments echoed from diplomatic circles, but the immediate future remained uncertain, overshadowed by the specter of escalating conflict and the plight of those caught in the crossfire.
