A sophisticated criminal network systematically targeted jewelry stores across Ontario, leaving a trail of shattered glass and stolen treasures worth tens of thousands of dollars. The operation, meticulously planned and executed, stretched beyond Hamilton, reaching into neighboring provinces and communities.
The brazen thefts often occurred under the cover of darkness, with thieves using crowbars to force their way into businesses. Before each break-in, the group would meticulously scout locations, posing as ordinary customers to assess security measures and identify valuable merchandise.
Ancaster Jewellers was struck on November 17th, losing over $60,000 in merchandise. Investigators believe this was not an isolated incident, but part of a larger pattern of carefully orchestrated crimes, with some businesses hit multiple times over several months.
Police dubbed the investigation “Project Crowbar,” recognizing the signature tool used in the offenses. The team operated with chilling efficiency: a driver waiting in a getaway minivan while four or five others swiftly raided the stores, focusing on high-end watches, jewelry, and even specialized repair tools.
A coordinated effort by the Break Enter Auto Theft and Robbery (BEAR) Unit, alongside Major Drugs and Major Gangs Units, led to the execution of search warrants at Hamilton residences and vehicle searches. The operation yielded a significant recovery of suspected stolen property, including a stolen BMW.
The sheer volume of seized items means a complete inventory will take weeks to finalize, promising a clearer picture of the extent of the group’s illicit gains. Investigators suspect the network’s reach extends far beyond Ontario, with similar break-ins reported in Brantford, Guelph, Niagara Region, Peel Region, Quebec, and other areas.
Five individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with the Ancaster Jewellers break-in and related offenses. Silviu Moraru, Ion-Ciprian Constantin, Mircea Drezaliu, Ionut Stroe, and Vasile Vasile now face serious consequences for their alleged involvement in this widespread criminal enterprise.
The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. Detectives are diligently working to unravel the full scope of the operation and bring all those responsible to justice, ensuring the safety and security of businesses across the region.
