Miriam Margolyes reveals why she turned down The Celebrity Traitors

Harry Potter actress and national treasure Miriam Margolyes has claimed that she was asked to be part of The Celebrity Traitors, but turned the job down.

Speaking at Cheltenham Festival over the weekend, the 84-year-old author and potty-mouthed star gave a very Miriam Margolyes answer when grilled on whether she would ever appear on the beloved BBC reality show.

“Well, I can tell you the answer to that. No,” she told the audience firmly.

“Because I was offered this job. No. Just recently and I can’t think of anything I’d rather less do… No, I’m not into that. I’ve never watched it, I don’t intend to watch it.”

Season one of the Claudia Winkleman-hosted show has proven to be a huge hit for the BBC, with the first episode being watched by almost 12 million viewers.

The lesbian actress, best known for playing Professor Sprout in two of the Harry Potter movies, has become a fan favourite to appear on a theoretical second season of The Celebrity Traitors.

With her signature no nonsense attitude, scathing candour and penchant for smutty toilet humour – she could rival actress Celia Imrie, for sure – Margolyes would undoubtedly make a brilliant contestant.

Sadly, it sounds as though even for ample money, the BBC won’t be able to convince her.

“There is some jolly good people doing it,” Margolyes continued, heaping praise on the current cast, which includes Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross and Cat Burns as Traitors.

“And if they want to do it for money, well, that’s fair enough but you won’t get me on it,” she confirmed.

Ross recently revealed that he “didn’t actually enjoy” being on the show, as he became “increasingly uncomfortable” with having to lie in his role as a Traitor.

The show follows a group of people, in this case celebrities, with some selected as Faithfuls and some as Traitors. All members of the group must convince each other that they are Faithfuls to avoid being banished from the group.

At the end of the series, the few remaining contestants will split a prize fund; however, if there is a Traitor among them, they will take the whole lot. In The Celebrity Traitors, the stars are playing for money for their chosen charity.

Margolyes appeared at Cheltenham Festival to promote her new book The Little Book Of Miriam, a “memory palace” of her “extraordinary life” featuring “wit, wisdom and unfiltered stories”.

Last week, she made headlines for describing herself as “unapologetically woke”.

Appearing on RTE‘s The Late Late Show on 10 October, she dubbed herself a “left wing d***,” adding, “and I love it. I love being a lesbian. I’m not going to apologise for that. It’s great fun”.
